“Magnetic
North” – is the first detailed autobiographic book by Tomas Venclova, a writer,
one of the most prominent and influential contemporary Lithuanian intellectuals. In his conversations with Ellen Hinsey, Venclova covers four
decades of life in Lithuania and Moscow and four decades of life in the United
States of America.

The
stories reveal not only Venclova’s biography and creative life but also a wide
cultural and political context: the writer conveys the atmosphere of the Soviet
times from the perspective of his personal experience with special emphasis on
the Lithuanian and Russian unofficial culture and dissident movement. The book
presents appealing stories of such political figures as Boris Pasternak, Anna
Achmatova, Josef Brodsky, Czesfaw MiJosz and many others.

Tomas
Venclova was interviewed by Ellen Hinsey (born in 1960), an American poet,
literary critic and translator who wrote the introduction to the book. In her essayistic
works, she puts much emphasis on the political and cultural development of the post-communist
Central and East Europe. She translated a number of poems by Venclova into the
English language, while Venclova translated her poem “A Concise Biography of
Tyranny” („Trumpa
tironijos biografija“).
She has been living and working in Parys for many years.

Tomas Venclova

Tomas Venclova – poet, essayist, literary critic, translator.
He was born 11 September, 1937 in Klaipėda.
From 1954 till 1960 he studied Lithuanian language and literature at Vilnius University. He worked at Institute of History and gave lectures at Vilnius University. In 1966 he established a Semiotics club. He entered Lithuanian Helsinki Group in 1975 and in 1977 he went to give lectures to Berkeley University (USA) and after that he worked in Ohio University. Since 1980 he worked at Yale University. He is a professor of Slavic languages and literature and now works at New Haven. His poems are translated into English, German, Italian, Swedish, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Chinese and other languages.
